"The shipping industry can be seen to be at the forefront of globalization, and it provides us with a good example of the associated challenges for labour, regulation and standards." Professor Helen Simpson, the Director of the Seafarers International Research Centre at Cardiff University is no stranger to the stresses and strains placed upon the men and women who work as merchant seafarers, having devoted much of her academic career to studying the impacts of work in one of the world toughest industries.
Earlier this month Professor Simpson announced the publication of a new open access book focussing on the world of the seafarer. This open access book constitutes an ethnographic mosaic which depicts the contextual complexities of the life and work of seafarers who are employed in the international merchant cargo fleet. The collection is based upon the observations and interviews of researchers in multiple disciplines. It is woven together to offer a richly detailed insight into the ways in which a complex global industry operates internationally. The book covers issues to do with career decisions and recruitment, gender, life and work on board multinational vessels, health and safety issues, the regulation of the industry, shipboard roles and role conflict, and the representation of workers. This book is a worthy addition to the world of maritime literature, and may prove to be a paradigm defining text for those of us who work in the sector and wish to understand more the world that seafarers and their families inhabit. The open access nature of the book means that it can be read by anyone, anywhere in the world free of charge.
