anchor.fm/as-the-crow-flies/episodes/S1-E15-Wrapping-Things-Up-for-the-Year-eo416o Released on December 22nd, 2020 (run time of 12:12) this episode reflects on the year that has been and the chaos that has ensued. It also considers what God might be birthing into the chaos for each of us. The episode concludes by outlining some of the topics that will feature in Season Two when it is released starting May 2021. "The shipping industry can be seen to be at the forefront of globalization, and it provides us with a good example of the associated challenges for labour, regulation and standards." Professor Helen Simpson, the Director of the Seafarers International Research Centre at Cardiff University is no stranger to the stresses and strains placed upon the men and women who work as merchant seafarers, having devoted much of her academic career to studying the impacts of work in one of the world toughest industries.
Earlier this month Professor Simpson announced the publication of a new open access book focussing on the world of the seafarer. This open access book constitutes an ethnographic mosaic which depicts the contextual complexities of the life and work of seafarers who are employed in the international merchant cargo fleet. The collection is based upon the observations and interviews of researchers in multiple disciplines. It is woven together to offer a richly detailed insight into the ways in which a complex global industry operates internationally. The book covers issues to do with career decisions and recruitment, gender, life and work on board multinational vessels, health and safety issues, the regulation of the industry, shipboard roles and role conflict, and the representation of workers. This book is a worthy addition to the world of maritime literature, and may prove to be a paradigm defining text for those of us who work in the sector and wish to understand more the world that seafarers and their families inhabit. The open access nature of the book means that it can be read by anyone, anywhere in the world free of charge. anchor.fm/as-the-crow-flies/episodes/S1-E14-The-Value-of-Working-Together-ene495 Released on December 11th, 2020 (run time of 41:15) this episode delves into the topic of ecumenism in the maritime sector and features an wonderfully thought provoking interview with Dr Jason Zuidema, the General Secretary of the International Christian Maritime Association (ICMA) and Executive Director of the North American Maritime Ministry Association (NAMMA). Jason gives us his take on why working together is critical in these every changing times and he speaks from his viewpoint of seeing the global work of the various maritime ministries. He also shares his views on what happens when we don't work together, and the benefits for when we do. Jason is a passionate advocate for productive ecumenical relationships who doesn't just talk the talk but also gracefully walks the walk. It is film from the Sasquatch Music Festival 2009, with commentary and insights by Derek Sivers. It was originally presented as a TEDTalk: www.youtube.com/watch?v=hO8MwBZl-Vc Because of the nature of their work seafarers spend long periods of time away from their families and therefore represent a group at higher risk for sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV infection. Unsafe sex, drug addiction, or procedures such as tattooing all play a relevant role in HIV transmission.
Seafarers are one of the populations worst hit by HIV/AIDS in parts of south east Asia — Cambodia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic Burma, Thailand, Vietnam and Yunan province (China). Prevalence rates among seafarers are as high as 22% in some places. Working conditions onboard a merchant vessel can make it harder for seafarers to access information about HIV prevention and related services to decrease their risk of becoming infected. Because seafarers are a highly mobile population, they aren’t always able to visit shore-based medical and information services. This is why it is important that advice and information on HIV and AIDS continues to be freely provided for seafarers. Ship Visitors and Chaplains can be a source of information, care and concern. May we continue to do all that we can to help educate and provide support. God, open our ears to the myths, stereotypes, and lies that keep these systems going, so that we may increase and abound in our love for one another and for all people. God, open our mouths to challenging conversations about race, sex, and differences, so that we may increase and abound in our love for one another and for all people. God, open our hearts to the understanding that we are all affected by HIV/AIDS, so that we may increase and abound in our love for one another and for all people. This prayer first appeared in a bulletin insert for World AIDS Day created by the United Church of Canada. “Every person can make a difference, and every person should try.” – John F.
